Overview
NUSAIL ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY, UK (NEC) was enlisted by Ayesa to undertake a Bathymetric Survey at Shoiba. This project was pivotal in providing a detailed understanding of the underwater topography, essential for future development and maintenance strategies.
Challenges:
1. Inaccessible Areas: The hydrographic survey at Shoiba presented unique challenges due to certain areas being inaccessible by boat. To ensure a comprehensive survey, NEC had to innovate and incorporate remote sensing techniques.
2. Coast Guard Permission: Acquiring the necessary permissions from the Coast Guard posed a significant hurdle. Detailed submissions, including the proposed methodology, team details, and equipment specifications, were presented. The rigorous and prolonged review process tested NEC's perseverance and commitment to adhering to all necessary protocols.
Methodology:
NEC's approach was multi-faceted:
1. Remote Sensing with Satellite Images: For areas the boat couldn't access, satellite images were employed. This data was integrated to provide a complete overview of the site.
2. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs): Elevation maps were generated from satellite images using GIS software like ArcGIS Pro. The process involved:
- • Importing the raster image containing pixel values for elevation.
- • Using the "Raster to Point" tool to convert the image into a point feature class.
- • Extracting elevation values from the pixel values.
3. On-site Hydrographic Survey: The NEC team mobilized to Shoiba and commenced the survey using state-of-the-art equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
Benefits:
NEC's methodical approach led to several advantages:
- • Comprehensive Data: The combination of on-site surveys and satellite imagery ensured that no area was left uncharted.
- • Innovative Solutions: NEC's use of GIS software and remote sensing showcased their ability to adapt and innovate, ensuring project success despite challenges.
- • Foundation for Future Projects: The data collected is invaluable for Ayesa's future projects, ensuring they have a detailed understanding of the Shoiba seabed.
